Postman Pat: Special Delivery Service is the spin-off and sequel series of the original Postman Pat series. This series is set in both Greendale and Pencaster. The Taylor family (Ben, Lauren and Lizzy) first appear in this series. In this show, when a Special Delivery comes to the sorting office in Pencaster, Ben telephones Pat on the mobile phone to come down and deliver it in one of the many special vehicles the SDS has for him. It continues the storyline of where the Original Series left off.

Production[]

The series was first announced in July 2007.[1] In April 2008, Entertainment Rights reported a 45 percent jump in annual profit and said it would roll out a 21st century Postman Pat, in the second half of the year. Nick Phillips said that they would be rebranding Postman Pat with a television series called Postman Pat Special Delivery Service, to be launched on the BBC.[2]

In the spin-off series, Postman Pat: Special Delivery Service, Postman Pat has been promoted to Head of the SDS and is now called upon to deliver anything. Each episode follows Postman Pat on a Special Delivery mission, from rescuing a runaway cow (A Runaway Cow) to delivering a giant ice cube (A Slippy Ice Cube). In his new role, Postman Pat commutes to the nearby town of Pencaster where he collects his special deliveries from the Pencaster Sorting Office. Postman Pat now has a new fleet of vehicles including a big van, a gyrocopter, a small van that looks just like his normal one, a motorbike (complete with side-car for Jess), a forklift, a 4x4 jeep, a snowmobile and a plane.[3] He has a new boss, Ben, who tends to give him instructions (whereas he was his own master before the "promotion"). Pat also seems to make more mistakes in his work since moving to SDS, largely because the new format is always based on one delivery, which has to go wrong somehow (thus often because of Pat's errors).

The series features an expanded and diverse cast, a fleet of new vehicles, a world full of gadgets and the new town of Pencaster. Postman Pat: Special Delivery Service first screened on BBC2 on 29 September 2008. The new series was commissioned by the BBC and produced by Entertainment Rights and Cosgrove Hall Productions.
