He is small, tough, and sturdy as a fell farmer needs to be. He follows his sheep all over the fells. While working through numerous weather seasons, the weather has ruddied his face and knotted his joints. He has a dry humour.

Trivia
Alf's puppet retooled into a burglar
- Alf's model wearing Ted Glen's cap was used as one of "The Burglars" in the aforementioned episode of "Bertha". The other burglar was depicted with Ted wearing George Lancaster's hat and Alf's green coat. Alf also made a cameo in the "Gran" episode "Snow Gran" wearing George Lancaster's hat.
- In the "Gran" episode "Gran the Camper", a character called "The Master" was wearing Alf's clothes.
- In the book versions of stories from Series 1, Alf Thompson drove a blue tractor with an enclosed cab.
- Alf was the first person to receive a special delivery package, in his case his highland cow, Daisy.
